Where Conversations Become Confidence: Reflections from the Trade Credit Breakfast in Zambia

Some of the most impactful conversations don’t happen in boardrooms.

They happen over a shared breakfast, where coffee is still warm, introductions become partnerships, and ideas and opportunities begin to take shape before the first presentation even starts.

That was the atmosphere as Underwriting Africa welcomed business leaders, bankers, insurers, brokers, and risk professionals to Zambia’s busy capital, Lusaka for an engaging Trade Credit Breakfast—a gathering that proved once again that when Africa’s brightest minds come together with a common purpose, remarkable possibilities always emerge.

As the continent continues to embrace greater economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the conversation was both timely and necessary. Trade is no longer confined by borders. African businesses are reaching new markets, forging new partnerships, and participating in an economy that is more connected than ever before. But every new opportunity brings with it a new layer of responsibility. Growth must be matched with resilience, and ambition must be supported by sound risk management.

Africa is in motion. New highways are connecting economies. Manufacturers are reaching customers beyond their home markets. Entrepreneurs are building businesses that think continentally from day one. The momentum is unmistakable.

Yet progress is sustained not simply by ambition, but by confidence. And confidence begins with information.

Information drives credit. It gives lenders the certainty to finance, businesses the courage to extend terms, and investors the assurance to pursue opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach. As trade corridors expand and commercial relationships deepen, Africa’s remarkable growth must be underpinned by financial institutions and insurers capable of delivering intelligent credit solutions tailored to the realities of our markets.

The next chapter of African trade will belong to organisations that don’t merely respond to risk, but understand it, anticipate it, and transform it into a catalyst for growth. Because when businesses can trade with confidence, economies grow with confidence—and that confidence begins with informed decisions.

Throughout the morning, the discussion explored an often-overlooked truth: every invoice tells a story of trust.

When a business extends credit to a customer, it is doing more than selling a product or delivering a service. It is placing confidence in a promise that payment will follow. Protecting that confidence is where trade credit insurance becomes more than a financial product—it becomes an enabler of growth.

The conversations moved beyond theory into practical realities facing businesses across the region. Delayed payments, competition from other continents and inter-governmental associations, uncertain economic conditions, large bond requirements, past collateral ability of local contractors alongside the challenges of trading across multiple jurisdictions remain familiar concerns for many organisations. Yet these challenges also present an opportunity to rethink how businesses approach risk—not as something to fear, but as something that can be managed strategically.

One of the morning’s strongest messages was that resilience is rarely built by avoiding risk. It is built by understanding it, preparing for it, and having the right partners to navigate it.

Representatives from the banking, insurance and corporate sectors exchanged perspectives on strengthening financial confidence, unlocking access to finance, and supporting sustainable business growth across Africa. The discussions reinforced an important reality: no single institution builds thriving economies alone. Banks, insurers, brokers and businesses each play a vital role in creating an ecosystem where commerce can flourish with greater certainty.

Perhaps the greatest value of the breakfast wasn’t only found in the presentations themselves, but also in the conversations that continued long after they ended. New relationships were formed. Existing partnerships were strengthened. Experiences were shared openly, reminding everyone in the room that collaboration remains one of Africa’s greatest competitive advantages.

At Underwriting Africa, our mission has always extended beyond providing specialist insurance solutions. Our fast processing with a feedback response within  less than 48 hrs and our overall processing period being a fortnight or less makes us not only timely, but accurate. We believe in creating spaces where ideas are exchanged, expertise is shared, and businesses leave feeling better equipped to navigate an increasingly interconnected marketplace.

As African trade continues to evolve, so too must the conversations that shape it. Every meaningful partnership begins with a conversation. Every successful transaction begins with trust. And every thriving economy is built by organisations willing to invest in both.

To everyone who joined us in Lusaka, thank you for contributing your insights, your experience and your vision for the future of African trade.

We look forward to continuing the conversation—because when businesses trade with confidence, Africa grows with confidence.
